St James Roman Catholic Church, - Ister-Granum

St James Roman Catholic Church,

Zeliezovce (Zselíz)

A Gothic parish church, partly dating from the second half of the 14th century, dedicated to St James. In the sanctuary (which preserves its Gothic character without alterations) are frescoes from the late 14th century, including one on the trial of George Vesszõs. Its altar is based on a Roman sarcophagus, partly carved over. The sanctuary and part of the south wall of the nave are Gothic (the sacristy also has Gothic parts). At the end of World War II, retreating German troops blew up the tower, and the nave and tower were rebuilt in the 1950s in modern style.
